Pitsmoor/Burngreave is a multi-cultural inner city community one mile north of Sheffield city centre. It is a New Deal for Communities area, and is the second poorest ward in Sheffield.
Pitsmoor has a bad reputation, which is related to recent problems of drugs and organised crime. However, within the community itself, there is a strong sense of optimism, reflecting the diversity that exists within a small area, and the work of a number of community groups that have become active in the last few years. We live here, and we love it.
This on-going photo-essay explores some of the cultures and people that make up this area, and aims to document some of the changes that come about as new deal money (up to £50million over the ten years to 2010) arrives within a small community.
Many of the photographs here have first appeared in the Burngreave Messenger, a free monthly newspaper put together by volunteers that goes out to all the residents of the New Deal area. Some have also appeared in an exhibition in Sheffield’s City Museum in the autumn of 2002.
The final aim is to publish a book, telling the stories of the residents of this area. An inital booklet, ‘Shadows Lie Behind’ telling four women’s stories, was published in 2002, in conjunction with Kate Thomas. If you are interested in purchasing a copy for £2.00 (including p&p), please email me..
For these pages, thanks to Kim Streets, Steve Pool, Kate Thomas, Firs Hill School, Christ Church and all at the Burngreave Messenger.
One of the major annual events that began in 1999 is the Abbeyfield Park Multicultural Festival (July 2000 - above and below right).
